Aquatic Affairs
Recipient of the FRINGE WORLD Tour Ready Award following a sold-out season and extended run at Sydney Fringe Festival.
Inspired by the true story of a controversial NASA experiment in which scientists, some under the influence of LSD, attempted to teach dolphins to speak English.
On a remote Caribbean island, in a specially designed, semi-submerged “Dolphinarium” funded by the US government, 22-year-old Margaret Howe Lovatt moves into a flooded laboratory to live and work alongside the dolphins. As the experiment unfolds, reality becomes stranger than fiction when Peter, a young male dolphin, reaches sexual maturity and develops an unexpected attachment to his human teacher.
Humans play the dolphins.
Written by Madeleine Palmer (NIDA MT 2022) & inspired by Rosie Waterlands’s Just The Gist.

Mads Palmer, 23, moved to Sydney from Ballarat in 2022 to complete their Diploma of Musical Theatre at NIDA. Aquatic Affairs marks Mads’ first time stepping into the role of director and sharing an original work. After almost five years in Sydney, Mads is immensely grateful to have built a community of talented and passionate friends, and is honoured to have the opportunity to create this work with them to bring the show on the road for FRINGEWORLD. Mads was inspired by Rosie Waterland to create Aquatic Affairs to bring people together, offer the community a prescribed opportunity to laugh, and ultimately, to process the chaos of the world. They hope you don’t think they’re weird after witnessing the Human Dolphin LSD Orgy — and would like to remind you that it’s based on a true story.Social media
