Fringe offers so many things to such an eclectic range of people. There are shows that are definitely more out there, and then there are shows like Disco Queen, which make Fringe more accessible to mainstream audiences, helping gently shape our culture to be more diverse and inclusive.

A few decades ago, who would have thought a reviewer would start a piece about a drag show by calling it a wholesome night of family fun? Yet, that’s exactly what Disco Queen was. A room full of people united by their love of disco music, led by a consummate entertainer who can command an audience, whether it be thousands at Crown and RAC arena or tens in the front room of The Vale.

If you haven’t seen Dean perform, they are one not to miss. With such a powerful voice belting out disco classics, Dean worked hard to fill the dance floor, and even those not dancing were bopping along in their seats. Special mention to Mikey, who was doing music tech for Dean. You would think after hearing these songs countless times, the enthusiasm would wane, but it didn’t. Mikey was in the corner dancing away, leading the audience in clapping along, and keeping the energy high. It was a pleasure to see Mikey's infectious joy.

Now, back to Dean—the star of the show. Dean performed two sets, each about thirty minutes long, covering disco classics and LGBTQIA+ anthems, interspersed with anecdotes and humor, making the audience feel connected and included. It was a feel-good evening. Who doesn’t love spending time listening to and singing along with the music you grew up with while having a boogie on the dance floor? What more could you ask for?

Everyone left smiling, including the couple of people who weren’t keen at first, having been dragged along to a drag show! Dean, ‘thank you for the music’ and definitely ‘thanks for all the joy you’re bringing.’
