If you are a lover of the cult-classic TV show ‘Kath and Kim’, this Fringe Festival show is the event for you!
The performance brings together musical numbers and pop culture references to present what these most beloved characters would possibly be like in lockdown during COVID. The concept creates hilarious situations and dialogue that had the crowd roaring with laughter and cheer. The use of audience participation and breaking the fourth wall allowed for spontaneous comedic moments to occur. The wittiness of wordplay and joking around with the crowd increased the entertainment and atmosphere of the show.
A lot of effort was clearly put into authentic costumes that really recreate and represent what is needed for a parody of ‘Kath and Kim’. The actors consistently committed to their roles, by taking on the same mannerisms, body language, and cadence of their characters in order to really emulate what they represent. Art Simone, Thomas Jaspers, Leasa Mann, and Scott Brennan, bring magic to the stage as an ensemble. The group cohesively and seamlessly worked with each other throughout the various stages of the performance, which is why the comedy of the show works so well.
The cast is clearly dedicated to their craft, performing with flair and charisma in order to entertain a large crowd. All different demographics were in line for ‘Fountain Lakes,’ and the show didn’t fail to engage everyone in the tent. It is clear why these tickets are selling so fast!
This play creates the nostalgia all Australians have when it comes to ‘Kath and Kim,’ whilst bringing fresh and new amusing elements to their story. It is incredibly inventive to reproduce a story that is a cultural staple in Australia and to perform it in drag. ‘Fountain Lakes In Lockdown: A Drag Parody Play’ is exactly what encapsulates the Fringe Festival experience and all that it offers.
