Hissterier
What does it mean to be classified as ‘crazy’?
Two women and their feline friends attempt to navigate a world where their eccentric and strange quirks are not warmly welcomed. Lonely, obsessive and utterly strange.
Are these women a tad too eccentric or do they simply adore all things cats? Are they hysterical or are they merely expressing their opinions?
Hissterier paw-nders on notions of mental health and gender politics, and asks audiences to decide for themselves - are these women in fact mad or is this their way of challenging and hissing at unjust gendered expectations?
Presented by: The Blue Room Theatre, Amelia & Kailyn
Amelia and Kailyn are emerging contemporary artists, who first met during their time training at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA). In addition to her training, Amelia completed a Bachelor of Arts majoring in gender studies at the University of Melbourne, and Kailyn graduated from WAAPA with a Bachelor of Arts (Dance) and Bachelor of Performing Arts Honours. Their artistic collaboration started with the first development of “Hissterier”, which was presented at The Blue Room Theatres 600 SECONDSprogram in August 2025. Shortly after this iteration, they spent time further developing the work at Australian Dance Theatre’s LOFT Experiment Residency. They are interested in how performance arts can be used to present gender related issues in a digestible manner.
