The SOWETO GOSPEL CHOIR returns to Perth in 2026 with an outstanding performance ready to sweep audiences off their feet. The choir is led by principals Mary Mulovhedzi, Shimmy Jiyane and Bogani Ncube, who drive an ensemble of highly lauded performers visiting from South Africa for their 'HOPE' tour of Australia and New Zealand.
The show begins with a ceiling-shaking entrance from Mary Mulovhedzi, who had the audience gasping before we could realise what was happening. She was quickly joined by the rest of the group, who lifted the momentum of the music and the spirits of all of us lucky enough to be in the audience.
We followed along eagerly through the joyous celebration of African heritage and music. Each song was more vibrant and delightful than the last, combining vocals with movement, dance and strong percussion. The concert never lulled, with a masterful grasp of emotion guiding us through a carefully crafted exploration of spirituality through song.
Glancing around the audience during the performance left me feeling more deeply touched. Each face held its own version of rapturous awe and attention, each person feeling the music deeply and expressively in their own distinct way.
The SOWETO GOSPEL CHOIR will have the most agnostic among us tearing up at the power of the musicianship and passion brought by these world-class singers. The few times in your life when you’re in the presence of greatness, it is absolutely unmistakable. This is one of those times.
