Off the back of their success with Rouge, Highwire Entertainment is back, this time at the very plush Heath Ledger theatre, with Primal.
Primal offers everything you know and love about FRINGE WORLD Festival, drag and divas, sparkles and sequins, feathers and flexibility, more skin than most of us are used to seeing gracing the stage, acro, aerials, and more in this high-energy show. Although I do admit to hiding behind my fan during the contortion parts, makes me nervous every time!
The standout for me was the sheer strength displayed when they flipped gender norms. The whole audience was holding their collective breath as women were basing men for some incredible strength-based acts. Strong is beautiful, and women really can do anything! Similarly, men should not be pigeonholed into strength-based roles (not to suggest that flying doesn’t take immense strength, too).
Strength and grace of the acro and aerials was interspersed with live music from our vivacious MC. Comedy gold came from a standout performer who rolled with it when things didn’t quite go to plan and they managed to make it even better than if it had worked the way it had in rehearsal (seriously, how hard should it have been for an audience member to hold a candle? He had ONE job)!
Primal is showing from Wednesday, 28th Jan - Sunday 1st Feb.
