80s Mixtape Prom Night is a terrific circus show that had the audience gasping with shock at the performers’ strength and agility, as well as singing along with the fabulous mixtape of 80s bangers. The music was everything you’d expect from an 80s mashup, and we bopped along to so many favourites from shows like Flashdance, Footloose and Dirty Dancing.

Kaleido Company is a young local company who have worked very hard to create this amusing and multiskilled performance. The premise of getting ready for Prom is well controlled by host Andrew Silverwood who engagingly, and with some amusing self-deprecation, steers the story along. His comedy links all the fantastic circus acts together and keeps the audience amused between each set-up on the stage.

The circus skills are highly controlled, and this talented cast uses a lot of aerial work; silks, lyra, trapeze, and straps all confidently worked in with raging 80s songs.

A highlight for me was the smoothness of the two performers with their roller skates and Leopard Print Lycra entangled cleverly together. They flew up in a square trapeze with a combination of skilful silliness and superb choreography. There were also acts of the full cast dancing, smashing good fun with champagne bottles, lots of acrobatic mayhem and a delightful sense of joy pervading the whole performance.

My friend and I coveted some of the 80s costumes for our next throwback party and we sang along with gusto to the songs of our youth. Dab on your blue eyeshadow with a heavy hand and race into the incredibly well-air-conditioned Big Top for a trip down memory lane. You’ll be amazed at how good this locally trained circus company’s performance is!
