“Burlesque vs Magic!” is the kind of show that anyone could enjoy. Our burlesque dancers for the night tastefully balanced sauciness with artistic craft, while Cameron the Magician managed to both enthrall and amuse with his tricks that were equal parts magic and comedy. Our audience was diverse in ages and backgrounds, with mother-daughter duos, couples and groups out on girls’ nights all seeming to thoroughly enjoy themselves.

Cameron was great at using audience interaction to engaging effect, and was able to skillfully constructing the perfect amount of tension to keep the audience on their seat and, at times, the chosen audience member slightly sweating. There was everything you’d expect from a good magic show, with the addition of a number of unique twists to elevate it to exemplary. There was fire, intentional ‘mistakes’ and phone smashing, all executed to a highly professional level.

For the burlesque performers, we were graced with the presence of Coco Fatale, Pixie Lust and Miss Lady Lace. Each of the performers brought their own unique element to the show and I was impressed by the diversity of the performances. The costumes were fabulous and the dances polished. While they all put on a fabulous show, I particularly enjoyed Miss Lady Lace’s choice of modern song twist, making for a fun and memorable performance.

In the end the audience gets to vote for who wins - deciding whether Cameron has to do a burlesque dance or the burlesque performers have to try magic. Either option is certain to be an entertaining finale, although I suspect the opportunity to see Cameron attempt burlesque is too entertaining an option for most audiences to refuse. Without spoiling anything, all I’ll say is expect to see endless handkerchiefs come from unexpected places.

Professional and well executed performances by all made for a perfectly joyful night out that could easily be watched twice.
