Perth is the best place to be right now with the 2021 FRINGE WORLD Festival starting on Friday 15 January and offering absolutely everyone a huge celebration of entertainment.
Festival Director Amber Hasler said that the opening weekend is shaping up to be filled with sell-out shows with Western Australians showing their huge appreciation for the artists.
“FRINGE WORLD is a joyous way to kick off the New Year. The entertainment is a feast for the senses with shows offering laughs, shocks, awe, thrills and all-round good times,” Ms Hasler said.
The 2021 program is huge with more than 500 shows at over 100 venues all over Perth. From Alkimos to Success and from Mosman Park to Kalamunda, the spread of venues is wide enough to make visiting a Fringe venue a 5min drive for anyone in Perth.
New venues and programs on offer in 2021 include the State of Play hub at The State Theatre Centre of WA featuring Confession: An Immersive Experience, the energetic comedy/drama What Of It? and more.
The Fremantle line-up is as strong as it’s ever been with music shows like Funked Up Brass! Party Like It’s Prohibition and dance works like the self-transcendent contemporary show Incy-Wincy.
Join Noongar singer-songwriter Phil Walley-Stack for an evening of pop-rock fusion at Midland Junction Arts Centre, where a host of shows are playing, or visit Ellenbrook Arts to see the exhibition Shaun Tan Rules of Summer.
Belgian Beer Cafe and Rubix Bar in the CBD have a broad comedy line-up of the likes of Troy Story, a comedic take on Homer’s Iliad, and the dystopian theatre work Dancing Monkeys of Spijker's Twist. As well as hosting the fabulous Reuben Kaye, The Rechabite in Northbridge has a side-splitting comedy line up including The Crushers Comedy Gala featuring comedians at the top of their game.
At Perth’s favourite Fringe playground, The Woodside Pleasure Garden, enjoy the delightful A Circus Sensation where ZAP Circus showcase their all-time favourite stunts in a brand-new show and the recently announced Bernie Dieter in Konzert brings her fabulousness back to the garden. Dave Callan and dancers return to dance you backwards through the alphabet from Zorba to Aerobics in A-Z of Dance and Shahnameh: Songs of the Persian Book of Kings - Winners of the 2020 FRINGE WORLD Martins Sims Award - return with a suite of songs inspired by the Persian epic poem, Shahnameh.
The Woodside Pleasure Garden offers the perfect grand finale for the Summer holidays with the Fringe Kids! line-up. Kid-approved comedy and thrilling circus plus free outdoor activities will be on offer from 15 January through til 2 February, open daily from 1pm.
At the grand place for good times, Girls School in East Perth, experience Backwards Slowly, an art installation that explore how people have thought, lived, and survived during isolation. Everyone's a winner in this game of chance, where Gavin ‘the Lady Gaga of the Jazz World’ Nicklette treats you to an evening of intimate cabaret at Gavin Nicklette: Cabaret Roulette. A handful of shows in the Festival have been affected by the recent border restrictions meaning that some seasons will start later and some shows have cancelled. Customers affected will be notified and if a session is cancelled patrons are encouraged to re-book for a later date and support our talented artists.
The 2021 FRINGE WORLD Festival is a big variety of shows with a predominately WA program of 80% local shows along with 13% from interstate and 7% of shows from international artists whose permanent address is not Australia but who were in the country pre-quarantine.
ARTRAGE CEO Sharon Burgess said that the organisation had designed the 2021 Festival to be flexible and supportive for artists so that no show would be penalised if they need to cancel due to COVID-10.
“We made range of changes to adapt to COVID-19 and ensure that our artists and customers can participate in the Festival despite the challenges that this situation presents us with,” Ms Burgess said.
“For artists and participants some fees have been waivered or deferred until after the Festival, and customers will also have peace of mind that if a show is cancelled or if they have COVID-19 symptoms they will get a full refund. The Festival also has a comprehensive COVID Safe Plan that has been approved by the government.”
