Wow. Just wow. If you only see one show this Fringe, it has to be Cultural Renegades.

This show is an explosion of how incredible the human body can be. Set in-the-round and with standing room only, this staging allows for the creation of what is known as a cypher circle, a dance space where blood and sweat creates new shapes to even newer rhythms. The result is an immersive experience full of chaotic order where the energy starts at 10… and just keeps on climbing.

Krump, body poppin’ and breakdancing are the main styles on show here. The dozen or so dancers are all incredibly fluent and dexterous in these forms. Their ability and skill make for a relentless display of abandonment that is playful and exuberant, the vibe infectious. And so it should be: dance is a communal moment of catharsis and healing, and this show has all of that and then some.

Woven throughout the dance battles and physical feats is a spoken word narrative delivered by two MC’s. This poetry is the heart and soul of the show, a linguistic story of self-exploration, struggle and finding identity by embracing the now and just dancing, be it with body or tongue. Or both. Spirit lifts when you give in to it.

If this review can make one suggestion to you, the future attendee of Cultural Renegades, it is this: get there early! You want to be at the front of the audience, to be consumed by the excellence on display, to feel the warmth, love and wry humour pouring off these performers. But be warned because you might get dragged up to throw a few shapes, so wear those dancing kicks.

Seriously, why are you still reading this!? You really ought to be booking tickets to see Cultural Renegades. Now! This show is simply beyond incredible.
