It’s amazing what can be done with bubbles! The bubble artistry in this show is phenomenal and as you would expect from the ‘Adults Only’ element there is a fair bit of titillation too.

Kurt Murray and Iulia Birze are well known in the bubble world, mainly as children’s entertainers Doctor Bubble and Milkshake and this show takes them away from the younger audience while retaining the central bubbles.

Both Kurt and Iulia display skills which go well beyond the pure bubble work.  There is slapstick, physical theatre, clowning, mime and a heap of innuendo.

The show is cabaret style with a recurring theme of the unfolding relationship between Kurt and Iulia as lovers and partners and lovers again.  Not long after they first meet there is an extended kiss which takes them all over the stage, both showing great endurance and agility.  Later, as their relationship deteriorates there is a groundhog day type sequence highlighting the monotony of married life.

Some elements work better than others and perhaps tighter editing would create a more coherent narrative.  At times the audience were restless and looking around eager for a return to the bubble action but as soon as the bubbles reclaimed centre stage the audience perked up.

Kurt is the technical whizz manipulating various pieces of apparatus for some scintillating bubble effects. Lulia is the glamourous side of the couple, sometimes burlesque performer, sometimes clown, always engrossing.

One of my favourite parts of the show was the pyrotechnics, ignited bubbles lighting up unexpected parts of Lulia’s body.

Overall Kurt and Iulia put on a titillating and unpredictable show.  I like it that you never really know where it is going and what’s going to happen next. Bubbles would be a good guess but beyond that …
