Woven through multiple rooms and multiple storylines, Midsummer Dreams is a creative and aesthetically pleasing take on a classic Shakespeare comedy. Held at the Heathcote Cultural Precinct, the performers at Modicum Theatre Perth take their audience through a journey of neon fancies, dramatic love stories, and playful faes, all surrounded by fairy lights and beautifully decorated rooms.

Audience members are encouraged to follow the performers as they run through the different rooms, and will find themselves at any point in the midst of a different story and a different character’s journey.

Audience participation is encouraged, and interaction with the performers- who are always in character from beginning to end, no matter what- enriches the experience and the story.

Truly, the audience feels like they too are at the mercy of the mischievous fairies as they chase Helena through the courtyard and the many rooms, listening with bated breath to the commanding presence of Theseus, and fall prey to the pranks of the impish trickster known as Puck.

Unfortunately for audience members with little or no prior knowledge of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, the simultaneous and constantly moving storylines can be incredibly hard to follow. It is impossible to be everywhere at once, and therefore a lot of the story can be lost. But this flaw does not lessen the breathtaking adventure that Midsummer Dreams brings its audience members on. By playing along with the performers, the audience truly feels like they are in the realm of Fairyland.

Midsummer Dreams is a wildly creative, beautiful, and refreshing take on an oft overdone Shakespeare play.
