Gillian English’s show title will get the attention of many fans of iconic playwright William Shakespeare and those who love teenage romantic comedies, however they may be a little surprised to find she is not really an advocate for either.

The title is based on Shakespeare’s play Taming of the Shrew, which was adapted into the film 10 Things I Hate About You.

English is a Canadian-born comedian living in Tasmania, mocking a writer from England and films made in America.

10 things I Hate About Taming of the Shrew will have you laughing and pondering about issues relating to feminism, as English unpacks various matters relating to Shakespeare and society.

She mixes in personal stories with her 10 reasons for hating Taming of the Shrew. Sharing narratives about her parents, sister, boyfriend and life at school.

English makes references to other Shakespearean plays and film adaptations, while she delves into concerns of feminine roles in film and literature, rape and paedophilia.

She even takes a swing at Walt Disney, while swearing excessively.

Although the course language is useful at times to add emphasis to her points, she goes a little over the top, taking away from some of the impact.

She also referred to her notes a bit too much, but overall her performance was strong with a positive message about how men should treat women and that not everything is about men.

The show has a strong message throughout with an even more powerful ending. English’s comedy style is comparable to Dave Hughes funny angry rants and is very timely with the #metoo and #TimesUp movement.

It is worth seeing for both men and women, because this show is just too good to be true.
