Whether you like murder mysteries or just want to have a good time, this is the show for you! Club Covet: An Interactive Murder Mystery is not just interactive, but immersive, encouraging audience members to join in and help solve a serious crime committed at a live burlesque show in Sydney—oops, I mean Perth (inside joke).
Upon entering the renowned Connections Nightclub, you are given a number, which is the break-out detective group you are assigned to. Bickering, backstabbing, and arguing are already happening among the Club Covet burlesque show members, so it is evident that the game is afoot right away.
We first learn that a sneaky video has been made of the lead singer and performer, Willow Avery, which was posted behind her back on Instagram and caused quite a stir. And the shenanigans that follow. The colorful characters, in addition to Willow (the annoying textbook diva whose fame has gone to her head), include the gorgeous choreographer, two sexy burlesque dancers, the fashionable costume designer, the macho bartender, the all-business venue manager, the nattily dressed troupe manager, the all-knowing stage manager, and a mysterious ex-partner lurking in the background.
The song and dance numbers that opened the “show-within-a-show” were sexy and fantastic and could easily be a stand-alone performance, especially the burlesque duo. The crowd was totally into it!
Once a crime is committed and the dust settles a bit, the audience sleuths break out into their groups and proceed to interrogate each of the suspects. Interesting questions were asked, such as:
Who turned the lights out? Who was having an affair with whom?
Who stands to gain from the victim’s death? Is there insurance?
Was the victim poisoned, stabbed, or shot?
Of course, when all of the suspects say that the victim was not personally or professionally their favorite, then everyone has a potential reason to commit this murder! The entire audience being drawn into the investigation generated quite the buzz of fun and activity.
Hats off to Back Door Productions for undertaking such a multi-faceted challenge. Getting all of the audience members to do as instructed is akin to herding cats. This is a very active show, not a passive, relaxing one where you simply sit and watch. I personally enjoyed getting to speak with each of the suspect/performers and seeing the backstage at Connections!
There was a full house for Club Covet, so get your tickets now for the weekend. It is on each night through Sunday, 16 Feb. at 6pm at Connections Nightclub. Don’t miss out!
