Skye Scraper stuns in this saucy comedy show, which looks back on the ups and downs of her time on a worldwide tour with fellow drag performance artists, as well as her impulsive and perhaps slightly under-researched decision to completely upend her life and move to London. To be fair – I, too, only know about Mayfair from games of Monopoly.
Before the show even started, the crowd settled into the absolutely divine downstairs area of Aces at the Maj. The plush red carpets, intimate seating and moody lighting create the perfect cozy atmosphere for listening to a night of comedic confessions from a seven-foot-tall diva.
The night begins with Skye sipping some bizarrely bright yellow chardonnay and giving business professional in a resplendent pantsuit. As soon as the house lights dim, Skye jumps right into the dramatic re-enactments, showing the audience the struggles of balancing life as both a drag queen on the road and an accountant over Teams. The physical comedy of her headset not reaching her ears over the towering height of her beehive wig – stunning. (And, of course, it wouldn’t be a proper pantsuit without the tear-away pants.) Skye’s writing is so witty, so funny and so genuinely heartfelt.
The room shook with laughter the whole night long, and cheered wildly with every lip-sync and dance number. On stage, she is a born performer and storyteller, effortlessly maintaining the extremely engaging narrative of her struggles and triumphs in trying to make it as a drag queen in London. I especially adore how she navigates stories about her misfortunes and missteps with just the right balance of honesty and self-deprecating humour, particularly when referencing past drug and alcohol use.
You can tell she is extremely passionate about her performance, and very skilled when it comes to making people laugh. I wholeheartedly recommend this show to anyone looking to enjoy a night of campy fun.
