Well, who knew Hell would have quite so many sequins and quite so much glitter?
Villainesque is brought to us by the team at Sky High Burlesque and when I read the description I assumed (what is it they say about when you assume?...) that it was going to be a student showcase, I was expecting it to be the more experienced students, but I was still expecting a student event. Hooley Dooley, I was wrong. Wow! These performers can perform!
The basic premise of the show was that the Devil was holding interviews. The world’s most notorious villains were being put through their paces to see if there would be ‘cohesion and synergy’ for the ‘dynamic and agile workplace’ so they could ‘hit the ground running’ after their ‘onboarding journey’ in Hell (if you are reading this ‘Devil’ I snuck in some HR buzzwords just for you! – If Hell really is filled with the high energy excitement you all portrayed AND sequins and glitter, I think I want in!)
The show is rated as ‘sizzle factor – very hot’ and it definitely earned that rating (especially with a couple of wardrobe malfunctions – miracle tape is not that miraculous in Perth summer heat and humidity it seems) but as consummate performers they did not let it affect them. The performers really are performers. Sometimes with burlesque it can be a bit ‘just get your kit off’, these performers gave so much more, their characterisation was enthralling, and it was a perfect combination of dancing, drama, humour, mischief and glamour.
They promise a thrilling performance and that is what they deliver. The venue makes it really tricky for audience to see the floor work that these talented dancers have included in their acts so if you arrive and the front 2 rows are taken, my advice is to head to the taller stools at the sides. You don’t want to miss what the dancers have to offer.
