The Simon Taylor: So Good show was soooo good! From the moment he stepped on stage in the Goodwill Club at The Rechabite, the audience was laughing non-stop for a delightful 50 minutes. This show was billed in part as safe to take your mum to, and it definitely lived up to that, as it was good clean, hilarious fun. It illustrates the point that comedians do not need to be raunchy or lob f-bombs all the time in order to be funny. Simon merely takes parts of his seemingly ordinary daily life and, like Rumpelstiltskin, spins them into strands of pure gold.

He regaled us with hilarious stories about childbirth and being a new parent, his favourite car accidents, schoolies escapades, helping a friend in need, and in general, trying to be a “good” person. Like a pro, he told mostly self-deprecating jokes, with laughs in every line. He shared about his confusion about knowing when conception starts, and then how fathers are treated like hopeless idiots in the hospital. Now, deciding to have another child, he says how “the first one was cute, but we thought we could do better.”

Simon has a mathematical mind, saying his son is 80 weeks old. If people can say 20 months, why not say it in weeks or days? He found some Irish men in the audience, whom he said he was not afraid of, unlike most men, because men in general are more likely to be killers than women. And, he interacted with an American, relaying how his wife was American and from Kentucky. And, that even though it is a Southern state, her ancestors didn’t own slaves because they were too poor.

Every joke and story had the audience laughing. This show was genuinely funny! On top of being a comedian, Simon is also a children’s book author, and his two books were available for purchase, which he autographed with a personal message.

The Goodwill Club was full, perhaps for the cooler air temperature in the lower level of the venue, but more likely because Simon has such a stellar reputation. The audience represented all age groups, and everyone would have been disappointed that the show ended so soon. It would definitely be worth it to see it a second time, it was that entertaining.

Simon Taylor: So Good runs through Sunday 9 February at The Goodwill Club in The Rechabite. Don’t miss out on this stand-out, stand-up comedy performance!
