Rarely is a Fringe show so clearly made to appeal to such a niche audience, and yet here we are—this show is basically a big warm hug for the Eurovision fandom. It’s full of campy, specific references that will bring an incredible amount of joy to fans of the song contest. You’ll be reminded of songs and performances you’d long since forgotten about, and singing along to all the biggest Eurovision hits.

And non-Eurovision fans who have somehow found themselves in the audience needn’t fear! As well as a quick Eurovision history lesson, Joe Louis Robinson provides you with all the context you need for each song with witty quips and videos to back himself up.

Throughout the show, Joe expertly juxtaposes anecdotes of his attempts to leave the UK with the happenings of the Eurovision Song Contest. He sings in French, Spanish, and Serbian as he tells the story of leaving the UK to teach English in Spain before finding his way to Australia. It’s not a tale you expect to hear, but it gives depth to a performance that otherwise risks being a straightforward medley show.

Joe’s musical talent shines, both through his singing and keyboard playing. And the fact that this is his first solo show makes it even more impressive. You’ll be clapping and snapping your fingers along before you know it.

The only criticism one might have of Eurovisionary is that it just doesn’t feel “Eurovision” enough. But what Joe doesn’t do in terms of elaborate costumes, complicated pyrotechnics, and bizarre dance numbers, he more than makes up for with his unbridled enthusiasm.

There is no doubt—Joe would certainly be voted Eurovision’s Number 1 Fan!
