On a hot summer’s Perth night, I was transported to Cuba for a toe-tapping, hip-swinging good time. I knew it was going to be good, but it was better than I imagined, and I was not alone—the standing ovation, catcalls, and deafening applause at the close of the show made that clear. In fact, I left the show thinking how lucky we are to have Adam Hall and his Velvet Playboys, with their deep international musical connections, making such events possible.
What a surprise—mid-show—to be treated to a brilliant serenade by an international Spanish acoustic guitarist. Just beautiful. Perhaps this even eclipsed the earlier fan favourites from the Buena Vista Social Club, played by some of Havana’s finest musicians.
Happily singing along by the end of the show, each song gave opportunities for the musicians to shine. As for the brass section and Hall’s own performance—brilliant. Engaging with the audience in a playful manner, Hall spoke of a young muchacho living his dream. For us, the audience, the dream was, in fact, Hall and his band playing for us.
This is a show not to be missed.
This is a five-star event. *****
