There are very few shows these days where I find myself fully immersed in the world they have created. I am happy to say Improv RPG: Call of Cthulhu was one of the those shows. As a self-professed Lovecraftian horror, this show called out to me. And I was quite honestly disappointed in myself that I haven’t attended in previous years for the show.
Despite having some knowledge of the show and having watched performances from some of the individuals involved in other acts – I was still relatively naïve as to what to expect from the show. I have seen some improv in my time, however not in the tone of horror and certainly not with the organized chaos that BS Productions has orchestrated by merging improv with role-playing mechanisms to create this unique experience.
The show's main highlight is the cast itself, and their impeccable chemistry. Another real standout for me, was their impeccable ability to set a scene and build tension. Alongside the talented cast performing the improv, are some equally talented musicians who’s atmospheric piano and melodic tunes do wonders to contribute to their scene setting. Did I mention all the songs are improvised as well? In addition to this, BS Productions serves a masterclass in how to utilize audience participation, allowing the audience to participate in the narrative and help choose (at random) the course of the story. Watch in real time as this story unfolds with madness, where both you and the people involved won’t know where it's going.
If you ever get the chance to watch any of their improv shows, I can wholeheartedly recommend booking a show for all three nights and go on this journey with them. You can tell all the people involved are truly having fun and love what they do, which makes it an even more enjoyable experience.
