If you’ve ever dealt with a boss from hell or found Disney fans a tad too suspicious, seek refuge in this show.
Wage Against the Machine takes you on Matt Harvey’s unique yet somehow relatable journey of career, injuries, and the great Aussie pastime of trying to navigate the Centrelink system. From his former Club X CEO to the Australian Government, he shares stories of his out-of-touch superiors and his battle to champion the little guy.
While you may not agree with Matt’s political leanings or his calls to action, he certainly had me take stock of my own, delivering his in a likeable and deeply empathetic way. Staying true to the humourist role, he keeps the audience involved in this compelling one-man show through his crowd work and trauma bonding, jokes, cringes, and moments of reflection.
But it’s the pacing of the show that brings Matt’s vast collection of anecdotes together in a way that makes it palatable, even if you’re not leaving the theatre ready to storm parliament house. With a real David vs Goliath theme running throughout, these stories are as varied as they are interesting, and as an added bonus, they come from a point of view that can often go unheard (particularly if you’re a theme park CEO). No pun intended; this show is a bit of a rollercoaster.
So unsurprisingly, Wage Against the Machine is worth the visit – go, rally around Matt, and listen to a collection of interesting tales from a deeply impassioned and honest guy.
