Captivating cabaret Ruth and Irene are back with a darkly comic cabaret, following the previous FRINGE WORLD success of ‘Golden Age Girls’.
This revamped show at Air Night Club is great fun and again features the all-round musical talents of Amy Fortnum, Jess Clancy and Jackson Griggs, WAAPA graduates all, yet again demonstrating that institution’s great role in developing stars of the entertainment world.
The narrative revolves around rival divas who are desperate to establish themselves as the number one soprano whether that be in the primary school talent show or the local nursing home entertainment market. Their rivalry is intense and unforgiving but their collaboration potential seems destined to remain unfulfilled until a dastardly twist plunges them together. Amy (playing Ruth) and Jess (Irene) are obviously gifted singers with great stage presence and dancing chops (showcased with a lovely little tap dance sequence), but for me what stands out is their wonderful comic acting.
The tones of voice and facial expressions when Ruth and Irene are being total bitches to each other are delicious. Ruth and Irene are superbly backed up by Mr Peter, some time school music teacher, some time small town impresario and some time funeral celebrant who provides accompaniment on the keyboard and also sings a few songs of his own. Jackson is a key part of the team of three in the performance without threatening the starring role of the divas – there would very likely be blood spilled if that happened. That said, the three performers have a lovely rapport and navigate the clever script with aplomb.
The show is produced by Bright Side Productions, a local theatre group that champions the arts by putting on shows and providing educational theatre opportunities for kids. Devilish, cheeky, tuneful, energetic – Another One Bit The Dust will not disappoint!
