Dizney in Drag: Once Upon a Parody was the definition of “bold and beautiful”. It was a fabulous hour of musical comedy featuring some of the Disney characters and songs that we know and love, but in a way that they’ve never been seen or heard before!

This fantabulous drag show had a diverse and vibrant cast, each with their own bold personality. The Hairy Godmother had an amazing stage presence and a glitter beard that was so sparkly it could be seen from the back of the room (and probably outer space). They did a spectacular job of guiding the protagonist through their journey to find their “one true love”. Each performer did a great job at paying homage to the Disney character they were portraying, while also making them uniquely their own.

While there were many times throughout the show that I found myself laughing at the hilarious antics of the characters, there were also quite a few jokes that fell flat because they relied too heavily on the shock value of seeing a Disney character be sexual. Dizney is Drag is not for the faint of heart.

The beloved Disney songs were rewritten to explore topics from healthy masculinity to exploring kinks. And I certainly didn’t know I needed to learn about menstrual health from a singing Tinkerbell until I saw it, and it was fabulous. The show also involved a healthy dose of audience participation, with volunteers being brought on stage to help with dances and acting out scenes.

If you’re keen to get involved, I highly recommend sitting towards the front! This was a great show to see with a partner or a group of friends! And there’s even a photo opportunity with the cast after the show!

It was a fun night and surprisingly educational as we went through a journey of self exploration and acceptance.
