“Why do you get out of bed?” This is the question that Emerson Brophy pondered in his musically political comedy show. It was a fun and interactive hour filled with music, pictures and audience interaction.

Emerson jumped right into the political scene by discussing his time in the corporate world, and all the lovely “games” they play. Followed by his famous TikTok sensation, “You won’t ever be a billionaire”. The show took a deeper turn than I was expecting, and while it was confronting at times, I appreciated the contemplative pauses between segments which allowed time to really think about what’s going on in our community and the wider world, the media we consume and what we do and don’t do about it. And while it looked a little grim towards the end, Emerson had the perfect song to end the night on to lift the audiences spirits.

Going from short TikTok videos to an hour-long show is a feat and a half, and while there were a few awkward transitions, Emerson remained entertaining throughout the whole show. He plucked at his ukelele, showed comically timed pictures and got the audience involved in making a sound loop. The songs were both thought-provoking and catchy, and it was hard not to start singing along to some of them.

With an innocent face and sweet melodies, you wouldn’t expect to have your political views challenged while also laughing out loud. This show is perfect for adults young and old, and makes a great night out with a partner, a group of friends or rocking up solo! While the songs are fun and catchy, I wouldn’t recommend the show for younger audiences, due to the heavier topics and occasional (or sometimes not so occasional) swearing.

All in all, it was a great night out and I highly recommend checking out Emerson Brophy’s debut solo show.
