In case the title doesn’t give it away, this is show is a combination of hip hop, break dancing (B-Boys) and aerialists (fly girls).
This is the second volume of this upbeat show. My very first thought seeing the aerialists walk onto the stage was ‘wow, they are nailing the ‘Strong is Beautiful’ movement’. Then the B-Boys started, and I thought ‘wow, so are they!’ The strength both disciplines require for the skill and control is amazing and the performers really know how to use and showcase that power.
I have to say, with all the attention that hip-hop, in particular break dancing, has garnered in recent times, it was fantastic to see it done well. They stayed away from what could have been some easy and cheap laughs and stuck to showcasing the genre in it’s best light.
Big props to the performer and the whole crew for the creative ways that in which they positioned them into the wrap for the opening silks act. A really creative way to change the dynamic of the set up.
The outline promises ‘heart stopping spins and gravity defying drops [by] super humans’. It delivered all that and more with the dancing en pointe accompanied by a hip hop partner, humour, up beat music, and more.
I’m not sure the final drop on lyra was gravity defying but my goodness it was brilliant and I will admit to letting out a totally involuntary whoop of joy! (All my previous whoops had 100% been voluntary but that one escaped!).
An engaging show that was suitable for all ages, thankfully, as the audience was made up of all ages from babes in arms to people 80+ and everyone looked to be enjoying themselves. At a 6.30pm timeslot, B-Boys, Fly Girls Vol. 2 makes for a great way to start your Fringe evening for adults or end your evening if you are out with the young ones.
