Sensual, cinematic and silly, Hyperfantasia is an immersive tribute to the 1920s silent film era.
Presented by Perth-based dance theatre collective Enneagon Movement, this performance brings a magical combination of contemporary dance and theatrical storytelling. The end result? An entertaining, immersive experience that transports audiences to a different time, shifting from satirical comedy on 1920s conservatism to a profound exploration of the female experience.
The show begins with the moody, sultry vocals of Amy Ehlers. With music credits going to Jazz greats such as Nancy Sinatra, Billie Holiday, Irma Thomas and Frankie Trumbauer, the soundtrack to this live production is both as enjoyable as it is nostalgic. Dressed in a gorgeous 1920s flapper dress, with gloves, jewellery and hair accessories to match, Ehler's presence is captivating and immediately draws you into a beautifully grayscale cinematic world.
Next up, dancers Giorgia Schilf and Minnie Karamfiles up the ante with their comedic, mime-like act. With strong allusions to early feminist thought, paying tribute to the fearless flapper women who defied societal norms, their intricate choreography showcases both skill in movement and expression. Bold charisma, comic artistry and raw strength truly shine through Schilf and Karamfiles, quickly creating a deep emotional connection with the audience.
As the show goes on, all three performers come together to showcase their artistic prowess, resulting in a truly alluring experience in the intimate Ellington Jazz Club. To enhance the magic on stage, Matthew Erren expertly manages lighting to ensure the right moods are captured throughout the shifting performance.
All in all, Hyperfantasia's intricate choreography and gorgeous vocals result in a passionate, soulful show, filled with comedy and drama. A performance as unique and innovative as this can be hard to come by.
