At first blush, I didn't think that a "sax-powered" band equated to a "dance riot," but I was incorrect. One normally associates saxophone music with jazz, not danceable rock 'n roll or "real" music in my opinion. This ten-piece band with eight saxophones and musicians dressed and acting like hyped-up gym rats had the staid-looking Ellington Jazz Club on the outside bursting at the seams on the inside. The promo that promised a hot and sweaty evening did not disappoint. And, it was very loud.
The audience was blown away by this "Sax-Powered Dance Riot" performance by The Perth Sax Rockers who cranked out infectious rock classics and modern hits. It was an exhilarating night (or just one raucous hour!) of great music and vibes that had everyone singing along and dancing in the aisles. If you were not dancing, there was clearly something wrong with you.
There were some excellent vocals, and certainly, the core strength of this band is in their instrumental prowess in all things saxophone, plus other brass instruments, drums, guitar, and keyboards. A few of the covers played (or blasted out) were "Call Me," "Shake It Off," and "If You Wanna Be My Lover."
This was the final performance, so if you didn't have the good fortune to experience this show at FRINGE WORLD '24, then look for The Perth Sax Rockers around town throughout the year, or sing and dance along with them at next year's FRINGE WORLD.
