What goes up must come down, right? Not if you're a Fly Girl circus performer in B-Boys, Fly Girls. The girls not only seem to fly through the air but they also embody the definition of a Fly Girl. That is 'a sexy chic with a swag all her own', 'who rises above limitations'. Yes, limitations of the laws of physics!
This high-energy show begins with a Fly Girl wrapping herself around a large hoop suspended from the ceiling. She contorts her body artistically around the hoop leaving us wondering what she'll do next. This sets the pace for the aerial tricks that the 3 lithe, athletic girls perform on a range of apparatus (including silks). This trio of girls are extremely graceful and skilled at what they do and their repertoire ranges from feats in the air to acrobatics and dancing.
The Fly Girls don't have the monopoly on dancing in this performance as the B-Boys prove themselves to be quite formidable additions to this double act. The Boys and Girls take turns appearing on stage and occasionally they appear together. The B-Boys have plenty of personality and are cheeky in nature. They expertly perform a range of Hip Hop dance moves which get more intense as the night moves on. This includes everything from freestyle, krumping, popping, locking and the most widely known breakdancing. They perform together and have their own individual chance to shine on the stage. The boys also have mini dance-offs.
The music is pumping, powerful and contributes to making the performance riveting and upbeat. The lighting is understated, yet complex and encourages the performers' strong stage presence. Smoke machines add a different ambience than a theatre performance. All these staging elements culminate in an experience that only a big top circus tent can provide.
This circus act is suitable for the whole family and definitely worth seeing. Oh, and the Fly Girls do all eventually come down for good in the end.
