A wonderfully heartfelt piece, reintroducing Ben to Perth after an extremely turbulent 2023. Sweet, delicate, bittersweet comedy.

Review by Amber Blake | 14 February 2024

Ben Russell has come back to Perth to tell his story about his comeback from the brink and it is glorious.

A man with 20 years of comedy experience delivers an honest and entertaining account of his struggle with addiction.

In a departure from past performances where character work was the norm, this show is 100% Ben.

Hear how an alcohol addiction both fuelled and unravelled Ben’s life. And more importantly, how the support of family and friends mixed with personal revelations rescued it.

In the tradition of other successful Australian comics - Hannah Gadsby, and Laura Davis - Ben has chosen to use his craft to address serious issues of mental illness, addiction and adult diagnoses.

That craft is expertly demonstrated through the story loop-backs and smooth integration of banter with the audience, laser-sharp one-liners and dark story elements.

Ben is the first to acknowledge his show is still evolving. Testing the limits of jokes mixed with less-then-comical topics is a delicate balance. Ticket holders for each show will likely see unique content and delivery as this master exerts his comedic muscle on deeply personal stories.

Having grown up in Perth, Ben embraces his audiences with local references and shared experiences. This makes the performance a comfortable and welcoming space, where hard truths can be shared and examined in an easy-to-manage format.

Ben confirms what he can now identify as the best moments or decisions in his life, even when at his lowest, involve treasured friends, family members and the love of his life. It’s proof there is always a sliver of hope in the dark episodes of life.

The simple advice from Ben to others making plans to leave this life is to simply put those plans off for a day, and then put it off again tomorrow and tomorrow.

Don’t put off taking this chance to see Ben Russell in his hometown. It’s a comeback and it’s special.
