Review by Melanie Griffiths | 09 February 2024

It’s been four years since Michael Griffiths last graced the stage at FRINGE WORLD and his dazzling return with his show, Greatest Hits, reminded us why he remains one of Australia’s finest and captivating cabaret stars.

The WAAPA graduate, Helpmann Award winner and Artistic Director of the Perth International Cabaret Festival brims with affable charm delivered with quick wit and a honeyed voice. It’s no wonder that even on a sweltering early evening, his first night the De Parel Spiegeltent had a substantial crowd.

Michael, backed by a guitarist and drummer, came out to greet the audience like an old friend before strolling through his fond memories of past Fringe’s. Touching anecdotes were tempered with Michael coaxing the audience to take on backing vocals for songs by ABBA and Soft Cell which they did with gusto. Michael’s warm stage presence drew the audience in, inviting us to share his joy and passion for pop icons like The Eurythmics’ “Thorn In My Side”, Madonna’s “Express Yourself” and Kylie Minogue’s “Locomotion”.

In the hushed moments, Michael delivered tender renditions of Cole Porter and Peter Allen revealing a deep understanding of his favourite artists and his ability to connect with the audience. His phrasing and tone served with a refreshing tartness of theatrical flair kept the audience smiling and upbeat throughout. The floorboards of the De Parel Spiegeltent vibrated during songs like the Violent Femmes, “Blister In The Sun” as people tapped their feet along to the hedonistic song.

The show moved at a cracking pace and even at just over an hour, it felt like it ended too soon. Going to a Fringe show can sometimes be a mixed bag (and that’s half the fun) but with Michael Griffiths, you can depend on this talented artist to deliver a show that has been crafted with consideration, humour and entertaining performances.

For those seeking the joy of timeless tunes, accompanied by a solid band and delivered by an unmatched cabaret performer, securing a ticket to Michael Griffiths' Greatest Hits show is a must-see delight.
