Laser Kiwi - Rise of the Olive is completely mad but in a very good way. This part-circus, part-comedy, part-sketch performance contrasts order with anarchy, to present a show that is both illogical and captivating.
Before the show began, each member of the audience was given a pair of retro 3D glasses and a program. I had no idea why I was seeing everything in blue and red, and I understood virtually nothing written in the single-paged run sheet, but I was intrigued.
With the audience brimming with anticipation, the show began in an almost cult-like fashion; a spotlight lighting up a large jar of olives and dramatic music lifting this marinated, salty stone fruit into God-like significance. The absurdity of the situation, and the suspense of not knowing what was going on, was the perfect way to begin, as the feeling of amused confusion was only amplified as the show progressed.
For an hour, the talented trio of performers take the audience through various sketches and circus stunts. While some sketches were funnier than others, the audience was howling with laughter throughout, save for the few acts that had them gasping in awe. A highlight for me was the aerial rope routine, which showcased one of the artists’ strength and dedication to her craft. I could have easily watched an entire show of this act alone.
The performers are clear professionals in both circus and comedy. They executed all stunts with ease and deliberateness and delivered the sketches with a commitment to the bit. It was a pleasure to sit back and enjoy the show knowing my attention was held safely in the artists’ hands.
If you enjoy humour derived from nonsensicality, or if you love to see circus done well, Laser Kiwi - Rise of the Olive is a great choice for a fun and entertaining evening.
