I have no words, in the best possible way the version of the show I saw was laugh out loud, bat $h!t crazy.
Cabaret can mean many things to many people and this show transported the audience to the glitz and glamour of the 1930s and from the moment it began it was keep your hands and feet inside the ride and hold on, this ride is off the rails and who knows where we will end up!
The show promises ‘unscripted’, a night of improv. I’ve been to improv shows before where the majority of the show was scripted with small moments to allow space for improv. That wasn’t this show. I am pretty sure they have a format for the introduction and after that, where they end up is anyone’s guess.
The performers, Isabella and Greg, or as they were known on our night, Daphne and Tea, have amazing chemistry and, I’d have to say misplaced, trust in each other. I loved them setting each other up not for the easy win but for the ‘oh yeah, and how am I going to work THAT into the show? Ok, let’s give it a go!’ They both seemed to be having great fun and the look of ‘Are you kidding me’ was received with a smug smile that was passed back and forwards throughout the whole show. My goodness, they are quick-witted and funny.
The ‘unscripted’ nature of the show means it’s unlikely that anyone else will get to see the interpretive dance of Daphne playing both roles of a Porpoise love connection or the porpoise caesar birth of 3 juggling balls which, honestly, is a shame. I’m sure that all shows will include hilarious interpretative dance, fun audience participation, amazing connection, beautiful music and over-the-top amazing musical numbers that will leave you clutching your sides with laughter and shaking your head asking ‘What am I watching?’
Sadly they entered Fringe too late to be eligible for any Fringe awards which is such a shame, but they won my vote for best cabaret or improv or comedy or whatever the category is for ‘oh my goodness I have no words for what I watched’.
They have shows until Saturday so if you are looking for a fun night and a good laugh it’s worth checking out Cabaret Unscripted!
