To begin with, you have the music of Dolly Parton which is unimpeachable. But then you hear it sung by Hannah Richards accompanied by Dan Clews on vocals and guitar and it's simply stunning. It's not so much that you feel Dolly is there in the Hat Trick with you, although she is in spirit, but that Hannah and Dan interpret the songs so it's them, but also Dolly.

An example is 'I Will Always Love You', which Hannah sang at a slower tempo than either Dolly or Whitney, but sang a bit of Dolly and a bit of Whitney and a lot of Hannah. And boy could she hit those big notes. There were a few tears drawn as a result, including Hannah herself.

Given Dolly's career has been going nigh on 60 years writing more than 3000 songs, you can only get a sketch in the 50 minutes this show affords, but it begins with her hardscrabble origins in a cabin in Tennessee and moving to Nashville with her first few songs like 'Something Fishy' and 'Joshua', her first (Country) number one. Once she hit the charts, the hits kept on coming and to the delight of the audience, Hannah and Dan brought them on: 'Jolene', 'Coat of Many Colors' and 'Love is Like a Butterfly'. Each is accompanied by a small anecdote to show where Dolly was in her career at that point and the meaning the song had to her.

Then the tempo rose as we hit the eighties and '9 to 5' which had the audience standing up and dancing, singing along. Indeed, there was a lot of pretty vocal singing by the audience, encouraged by Hannah and Dan. But how could you not when the atmosphere and the joy in the tent was higher than any revival meeting? Then came the vocal stretching of 'Blue Smoke' which tested Hannah and she really put her all in as the tempo sped up and up and how Dan didn't break a guitar string or two, I don't know.

Both Hannah and Dan are as professional and engaging performers as you could imagine, being warm and embracing the vibe (super positive) and they had everyone up and dancing to the only closing number that could really do it: 'Islands in the Stream'. But of course, you've stopped reading this a while back and bought tickets...
