Fans of The Beatles are in for a treat with this spirited show that is chockful of the Fab Four’s classic hits but with a Louisiana twist. At the show's beginning, Adam Hall promised that he and the Velvetboys were “gonna take you down to the swamps of Louisiana”, and they delivered that in spades with the surprise combination of Brit rock and jazz.

Adam Hall and the Velvetboys are a bit of an institution in Perth, having played at festivals and shows for many years. For FRINGE WORLD, the band flips rock music on its head by melding jazz with their take on classic rock ‘n’ roll to create a toe-tapping New Orleans party.

Focussing on the Beatles’ dance hits, this gig had people up on their feet twisting and shouting the night away. It was hard not to when beloved hits like “I Saw Her Standing There” were performed by a zesty brass and rhythm section.

Given that the Beatles' musical inspirations included blues legends like Carl Perkins and Buddy Holly, their songs worked incredibly well with the jazz and R&B arrangements. And a couple of fluffed lyrics didn’t seem to pique anyone’s attention as the band’s swagger kept the crowd smiling and entertained.

Adam, who stood on stage as the ultimate bandmaster, encouraged the audience to sing along to legendary songs like “Hey Jude” and “Obla Di Obla Da”. Later, the tempo was slowed with a serene rendition of “Yesterday”, accompanied on an acoustic guitar by talented player Louis Rebeiro. Performed under a night sky, it was the perfect remedy for a blistering hot day.

The set finished far too soon; this performance could have easily gone on for another hour with how fun it was. Adam Hall and the Velvet Playboys are synonymous with having a fantastic time. And with the beloved songs of The Beatles, it’s a win-win situation for lovers of music, nostalgia and good vibes.
