Watch the most popular tabletop game come to life as three players take it upon themselves to complete the Dungeon Master’s quest. Tonight’s performance took place in a fantasy setting on the high seas, the low seas, and the middle seas. Full of hilarious characters with a penchant to kill first and think later, the show was skilled chaos with brilliant on-the-spot songs, a sexy lampshade, an intelligent parrot, and great love for Danny DeVito. Sounds random right? Because it is!
Each show is a unique performance following the Dungeons and Dragons format where the Dungeon Master (the storyteller and the only one who knows the planned campaign) narrates the setting and situation the players find themselves in. With the help of a talented musician improvising mood music the entire show, and a versatile actor who plays all the side character roles, known as non-player characters, they build an adventure the three players must navigate.
The players were brilliant, each their own unique characters with quirks picked out by the audience. Together they would sneak, steal, kill, and break into song in order to survive the quest, coming up with hilarious ways to overcome each problem they stumbled upon. A roll of a 20-sided dice would then decide the success rate of their actions and where the story goes next. So, no one knew how it would end!
Like many improv shows some audience participation is needed, such as calling out beloved pet names or what a character’s hidden weakness should be. It was also a lot of fun to boo and cheer the players depending on how well the dice rolled in their favour. Having never played Dungeons and Dragons myself, I can guarantee you don’t need any DnD knowledge to enjoy this show with everything needed explained at the beginning. I’d recommend this to anyone from teens to grandparents who are keen for a laugh and some classic fun. I had such a great time at this show, it made me want to play Dungeons and Dragons myself!
