Risk-taking in comedy is par for the course, but what Chris Shin does in Brewed Laughter is another level.
You’re asking for trouble as a stand-up comedian when you scull 5 different beers and discuss the tasting notes with your audience - keep in mind the audience is also drinking these 5 beers.
The first couple of Matilda brews are quite sedate and the audience participation is a little bit laboured and held back. However, as the fermented hops kick in, the crowd becomes raucous and the banter is on for young and old.
It’s an interesting concept for comedy- rather than deliver a set piece of jokes, the comedian ad-libs with his punters.
Shin opens with the typical comedic repartee of targeting an audience member. The rest of the room feels for the random stranger but at the same time counts their blessings that the banter is not targeted at them.
However, this moment of relief is brief as Shin systematically manages to make every single audience member spill their life story for the amusement of the rest of us. Shin’s 10 years on the comedy circuit, including gigs at Edinburgh Fringe, allow him to easily rip into the audience with quick responses to their answers. The audience becomes the show.
Don’t be frightened - it’s not malicious banter, it’s quite witty observational humour. The charm of the young Korean comedian encourages the audience to banter back and that’s what makes this show a riot of fun and just a brilliant night out with friends. The atmosphere is helped by the booze and the amazing location looking out onto the stunning Swan River from the rooftop bar at Lucky Shag.
This is a highly entertaining show from one of our locals- but be prepared to get tipsy and take some sh*t from a comedian on top of his game.
