Run, don't walk to the Fantasia stage at Perth Town Hall where 20 empty chairs await volunteers to be hypnotised by the Top Fun / Top Gun, Matt Hale / Tom Cruise look-alike host for the evening.
The show begins with a video feed from the Green Room of Matt Hale air guitaring to heavy metal music and then leaping off the stage into the audience. His pink and white striped soccer socks delight as well as his creation of a wonderfully fun, chaotic show.
He encourages "focussed thought and imagination" which soon results in the volunteers playing an imaginary keyboard, acting like meerkats, smashing guitars, flying fighter jets complete with g forces, stomping around like T-Rex's, doing the Zombie Walk, and shaking it up to "Footloose," all the while in a trance.
The audience roared with laughter and glee watching Alexander transform into a very energetic cheerleader, April playing seriously good saxophone, Cathy demanding to speak to the manager whenever Matt said the word beautiful, and Chelsea singing singing "Whoa, oh, Livin' on a ... Carrot!"
You need not fear being chosen to go on stage, as there are so many people who want to do it voluntarily, and the hypnosis is more effective is one is amenable to it. Matt Hale is not doing Fringe next year, so you must see and participate in his show this Fringe season.
