Sometimes FRINGE WORLD presents us with an unexpected delight and the team from Crash Theatre Co have produced a crowd-pleasing winner with this show.

One of William Shakespeare’s most famous tragedies forms the inspiration for a wonderful musical comedy. All aspects of this show are top-notch.

There is a cracking script, written by Courtney McManus, which cleverly develops the themes of ambition and power with judiciously inserted quotes from the Bard. It is both a simple tale of a girl who wants to be the captain of her year eleven school netball team and a complex exposition of the dangers of the unchecked pursuit of ambition. Courtney also takes on the role of Coach Duncan and revels in the coaching cliches of your typical former player.

The music and songs are brilliant courtesy of the multi-talented PROJECT BEXX, and I loved the way “in thunder, lightning or in rain” becomes the basis for the team song/ battle cry for the Dunsinane Hell Hounds.

The choreography by Shannon Rogers is great, with the cast so clearly enjoying themselves in the dance routines.

And the performers themselves are universally excellent, bringing a youthful exuberance and glee to the production.

The three witches/weird sisters sequences are hilarious, the actors in their silk cloaks slickly and joyfully executing their dance moves.

No knowledge of netball or Shakespeare is necessary to enjoy this show although there are some subtle and not-so-subtle references that aficionados of the sport or the play will particularly appreciate.

It was a privilege to be part of the Saturday night audience. It was such fun. What a shame the venue isn’t bigger because once word gets out about how bloody good this show is, the tickets will be like gold dust - so get in quick.
