Swirling musical absurdity! I wasn’t quite sure what to expect from this show, but neither would the performers so this wasn’t of concern. What followed was an example of the magic that is creating something out of nothing.
The five red and black-clad members of Impromtunes burst with instant energy, backed by an ever-reliable drummer and pianist. After a brief explanation of the show, delivered with a television presenter-like enthusiasm whoever shouted their phrase loudest selected the title of this evening’s musical. Would You Do It for Five Bucks? A protagonist somehow was created from this ambiguous phrase, accompanied by instant choreography.
A million different plot lines could’ve come from this simple phrase, but no matter how bizarre, a clear beginning, middle and end were decipherable. Any mental blocks or not-so-well-timed entrances were treated with great humour or simply danced away flawlessly.
A pure passion was visible from the performers, beads of sweat glistened on their foreheads, while trickles of saliva shot from their mouths. Understandable with the force of their voices, beaming in solo sections, and coming together to form an almost choir sound with just the five of them.
This show was a genuine feat of musical, performance, and creative skill. You will be left with a desire to try and understand their ways. I’m already planning my next visit, and a visit to their late-night adult show Badprov.
