Review by Giorgia Beasley | 20 January 2024

So, here’s the thing, I am possibly the most squeamish person on earth. Just the slightest hint of medical chat, and I will absolutely pass out. So, for years and years now I’ve seen Dr Ahmed’s show go on sale, heard the rave reviews, and before I could convince myself that I’d be able to stay conscious throughout it, it would sell out.

But 2024 simply must be my year, because last night, there I was - tickets in one hand, cold water in the other, ready to finally see (hopefully) what all the fuss is about.

And let me tell you, this show was seriously funny. So funny, even the biggest hypochondriac could forget their fears for the hour.

Dr Ahmed is very clever, his degree gives us that much for free. But his turns of phrase, timing and storytelling skills reveal someone a cut above the rest. Throughout the show he had the audience hanging on his every word, taking us seamlessly from the harrowing to the hilarious. Each twist and turn had us cringing, caring and cackling, sometimes all at once.

A standout was his recreations of his conversations with his urologist. It always seems like a cruel twist of fate when doctor becomes patient, and Dr. Ahmed is no exception. Clearly born to care for others, he’s simply a terrible patient. His pain, embarrassment and drama around his tiny pests of kidney stones are so relatable, you need to hear the story straight from the horse’s mouth.

Perhaps most remarkable though is the overarchingly positive feel to the show. Health stuff can be scary, and we’ve probably all left something a little too long before going to the GP at least once in our lives, but Dr. Ahmed’s humour makes everything feel just a bit more approachable.

This show is a crowd pleaser, epitomised by its continual selling out. Whether you love popping pimples and all things gory, or you’re more like me and need to hit the decks at the sight of a papercut – you’ll love this show. While there were a few tiny moments of forgotten lines, he handled it with so much grace and good humour. And given I don’t want to be haunted by his dead mother, all I’ll say is, get everyone together, go see it now!
