"Deliberate cruelty is unforgivable” says Blanche du Bois in the classic play, A Streetcar Named Desire.
Drag superstar Myra du Bois isn’t cruel to her audience, after all, as she tells us, she is an empath. But she does deliberately shoot all her stinging jibes at us “with love.” We gleefully lapped up all the clever double entendres and laughed uproariously at the cunning bites she gave her slightly nervous audience. After all, you never know if you will be next!
Myra is a skilled expert at her craft. She can read a crowd with a quick glance and she had us summed up in a snap. Perth on a hot Monday night at Connections, a disparate bunch ready for some wild fun. Myra is a gorgeous, blonde and marvellously mature drag queen who has graced the enormous stages of the London Palladium and the Sydney Opera House, even competing on Britain’s Got Talent making the sour faced Simon Cowell laugh.
Myra has the strength of character that forces us into believing we should have dressed better, had more exciting jobs and put more product in our hair. My favourite line was, “You’re the ones orchestrating your own good time.”
Myra’s show entitled, Be Well, examines the journey Myra has gone through recently into mindfulness and her exploration into a Wellness Detention Centre. She sings some hysterical songs and encourages us (with some force) into singing along with her. The refrain, Be More Myra, is an action that I would actually go along with. Being like Myra, a super confident, super quick and powerful queen, is a dynamic and fun role to play.
Whilst Myra relies heavily on audience interaction, she coped beautifully with some of the more awkward people in the audience not participating as completely as she expected. Myra shone when performing the date scene with good natured audience members relishing their roles as waiters and love interests. Drag is all about illusion and caricature to create larger than life personalities, Myra du Bois is a stunning example of drag with wit and bravado creating a highly entertaining show.
Myra is a shiny, sparkly, razor-sharp performer and I’m so glad I got to see her.
