You know you’ve had a fabulous night at the theatre when you and your friend are happily sharing stories of your own after the performance, relating what was expressed on the stage to your own lives.
My friend and I have been besties for 50 years this year (I know, we are ancient, we met when we were eight years old!) and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves at “Stories from the Heart.” The reason we started reminiscing was that one of the stories, told by David Lewis, was about a time when he and his friend were throwing “boondies” of sand at each other in the playground. I, too, loved a good boondie throw in those days, although my friend declared she would never have done that!
Lisa Evans, the creator and host of “Stories from the Heart,” smilingly gives beautiful introductions to each of her performers. She includes interesting personal details, showing a delightful sense of love and pride for them all. Lisa’s linking sections make for a smoothly run show and they set the positive tone.
This is a show where local, everyday people entertainingly share their life experiences. This year’s theme is “I Didn’t Expect That.” Like many of the audience members I have seen this show before, but each one is totally unique and charming.
All the stories have a joyful energy to them, they are uplifting and hilarious. Sunday’s show included true tales of dealing with Italian stallions when travelling to Italy, an airport disaster with apple smelling shampoo, a Fremantle prison near riot, some nasty Chinese tea and a nervous operation in Antarctica with limited anaesthetist experience.
The final performer, Eamonn Reid, was a fitting end to this overall light-hearted show. His story about his amateur drag show performance where he dressed as Cher, was tremendous fun. His cheeky, self-deprecating manner when telling a tale that included being embarrassed by his own appendage made this a wonderfully memorable anecdote.
There are a range of different performers on each of the nights that this lovely show is on, and I would definitely recommend it for all ages. “Stories From the Heart” makes your heart feel happy and glad that you were part of the experience.
