Uncorked Comedy is a wonderfully Fringey show, the kind of Thursday entertainment you can only find during this incredible time of the year in which we’re graced with FRINGE WORLD. It was unexpected, hilarious and somehow joyfully out of control, with the audience seeming to take the reins by the end. This was the kind of show where unruly tipsy hecklers liven the experience, rather than hinder it - there’s no risk of being the embarrassing wine drunk audience member here.
Each round of wine was produced quickly, with five varieties provided in total - two whites, a rose and two reds. Unexpectedly, the jokes and general sense of comradery improved with each. This was among the more fun parts of the show, the closeness of the audience members and the feeling of friendship with the comedian by the end. It is perhaps an indication of quite how much fun I was having that I cannot remember our comedian’s name (the host changes each performance), but he put on a thoroughly enjoyable show. There was limited structure to the set and at times it felt as if the audience was providing its own entertainment, however this was ultimately part of the fun, for example leading to an impromptu game of heads or tails the audience decided it wanted. In saying that, the anecdotes and jokes he provided were hilarious and he ended the show with a fast five stories - a bold finish, much like that of our final shiraz.
The wine itself was less of a focus than I expected, and it would’ve been fun to hear some riffs on the wine itself, or more on the snobbery around wine and wine drinking. But regardless, the wine provided a delicious accompaniment to the great company and witty jokes. Undoubtedly the best excuse to drink on a Thursday and the perfect way to kick your weekend off to an early start.
