This charming children’s show is an epic quest of strength, heart, and self-belief, in the form of a circus-filled mythological narrative.
When Vikings begins, lights flash red and the music intensifies, heavy in suspense and the beating of drums. Voiceover narration informs the audience of an impending journey, in which Thor’s hammer must be returned after being stolen by the mischievous Norse god, the trickster Loki.
Two comedically-characterised Vikings attempt to prove their ability to undertake the aforementioned journey by physically outmanoeuvring one another. A competitive Eye of the Tiger montage ensues, involving dance, acrobatics, physical comedy, and humorous feats of agility and strength.
The two key characters must learn to work together through a series of interrelated challenges involved in a mythical Thor-driven journey, all of which involve various elements of circus. These elements include (but are not limited to) skilful juggling, dynamic diablo, breathtaking balancing, and a funny (but still very graceful) slapstick aerial act.
Vikings makes excellent use of the space, with brilliant props and costumes that include a flying bird puppet, and an actual moving longboat; particularly impressive during an intense storm scene.
Do the dynamic duo find Thor’s hammer? Perhaps.
Do children love this show, and is it worth seeing? Most definitely.
