Charlie Caper will enchant you.

This internationally-recognised and highly-acclaimed Swedish magician has claimed a weekly award for at FRINGE WORLD each time he’s attended - and it’s not hard to see why.

Stepping into the dimly-lit, intimate tent, there’s a frisson of anticipation. For 55 minutes, Caper draws you into an old-timey setting created through his three-piece suit, simple decor and subtle music.

An array of objects (classic magician’s favourites including cards, balls and glasses) endlessly disappear and reappear from odd places. The bow tie in particular earns a gasp every time. An accomplished illusionist, he’s not afraid to repeat a trick, but as closely as you may watch, you still won’t see how it was done.

Of course, there’s plenty of audience participation to add to the authenticity. Put your hand up to pick a card if you’re a sceptic.

Last night’s audience (consisting of people of all ages) was enthralled, from the young boy whose jaw dropped as coins were plucked from behind his ear to the adults having a laugh at jokes intended to go over kids’ heads.

Charlie Caper’s show evokes a nostalgia for a world we never lived in, filled with peace and connection, mystery and delight.

Equal parts charming and confounding, this show epitomises the kind of quirky, high-quality entertainment (at a pocket-friendly price point) that makes FRINGE WORLD such a delight. It’s no surprise it earned a standing ovation.
