Blazing green lights flare across the scene at Connections Nightclub as high impact performers with rocking energy burst onto the stage for the premiere of “You’ve got Moxie Kid.” The audience can be forgiven for forgetting it’s a Monday night as they holler and scream in appreciation for the opening number. A lot is going on… retro mod-performers dance around a winged golden artist as she rocks the stage… wait is this spectacular drag queen dressed as a cockatiel? And are they being caressed with broccoli? Look it doesn’t matter the audience are 100% onboard …are we sure it’s a Monday?

This weird goodness could only be explained as a night of Fringe-ing, the star of the show; Moxie Heart shares that this will be a tale of how she arrived onstage as a drag queen and an exploration of the turbulence as well as the unbridled joy she gets to experience by doing what she loves.

And yes she is dressed as her cockatiel and she introduces her offsiders as her broc-chicks because she loves broccoli, what of it?
This spirit of fierce individuality is the golden thread throughout Helen (Moxie’s) autobiographical storytelling.

What ensues is a combination of musical theatre and drag at its finest. This story shares how a female drag queen has stepped into her confidence to create a character that embodies femininity and is very much a part of who she is. There is mention of how seeing representation of female drag work is incredibly important for aspiring performers. She also speaks to the way in which she has been embraced by the welcoming drag community and the challenges of also being a woman in the drag world where this is not a typical presentation.

I wouldn’t be worth my salt as a reviewer if I went to a drag show without mentioning that Moxie’s makeup was on pointe and actually has a pretty special backstory.

We also get to see the versatility of the broc-chicks as they effortlessly transition from being broccoli into Avril Lavigne’s “Sk8er Boi” and ballet girl. These performers were talented as they mimed as well as sang and danced, they doubled as prop-wranglers and had hilarious and engaging facial expressions.

This show had the perfect selection of songs to engage the audience and tell Moxie’s story. The character she has created has spunk and very much like the performer she has a fearless, courageous spirit.

Helen graciously thanked the audience for supporting diversity in drag and shared some of her most vulnerable and elated moments, this is a heartfelt journey and it is truly a privilege to be a part of witnessing it.

This show has it all, it will have you laughing throughout and also inspired by original songs that will embolden you to find a way to your passion and hearts desires. You will leave the club both inspired and as elated as Moxie is, now that she has found her heart.
