Hilarious. Improv DnD is a fantastic show that can be enjoyed by nerds just as much as “the people who threw us in recycling bins in high school” - as the game’s Dungeon Master described them. This show highlights some of the best aspects of the role-playing game Dungeons and Dragons, which has risen in popularity over the last decade, with added improvised music and performance. From enjoyable chaos, surprises at each turn, and general hilarity - it’s clear that the players and the Dungeon Master are enjoying the show just as much as the audience is, as the interactive story takes shape.

This show is a little bit improv, and a little bit DnD. The characters on stage have a quest to complete, and several barriers along the way, which they must overcome with some creative thinking and some good dice rolls. Each night of this show is different - but several performances follow the story of the same three characters: a matronly night hag who sings, dances, and preys on the souls of children; a southern-sounding vampire who has lost touch with her family; and an orc who is not the sharpest tool in the shed, trying desperately to commit an act that is evil enough to win back his god’s favour.

Lurking in the kitchen and the dungeon of the castle, the three characters must devise a way to reach the king. Each move they try to do - from bending the bars of a prison cell, to casting a spell - must be accompanied by a high enough dice roll to be successful. The fluffy, purple, 20-sided dice is rolled live on stage. A 20 is an instant success, and met with resounding cheers from the audience. A 1 is a failure - and the audience boos in turn.

By the end of the episode, you are completely invested in the story, and the characters’ quest. With interested twists and hilarious, unexpected moments along the way, but a well-crafted plot line running underneath it all, you’ll be laughing along the way, and desperate to know what comes next!
