Funny, sexy and featuring non-stop talent, this show has absolutely everything. When the performers aren’t stunning you with a dynamic and sensual dance number, they’re singing, drumming, acting or cracking jokes. El Escándalo is Spanish for scandal, and that’s what it’s all about: drama. A telenovela-esque plot full of love, intrigue and revenge helps the audience follow the story that each scene is telling, but it’s all in good fun – if you lose track of who is meant to be betraying who, the performers’ expressive and charismatic performances speak for themselves.

It’s not all Spanish, though. This show is one hundred percent for a 2023 audience, with queer vibes, vaping, and overuse of the word ‘toxic’. It’s got a very Aussie appreciation for finding moments of humour in between the drama and emotion, too. The energy coming off the cast is infectious, and even from the back seats you can feel that the performers are confident and passionate about everything they do onstage. There’s moments which are clearly a tour de force, and the audience goes wild cheering every time the dancers expertly pull off a particularly difficult move.

The Underground: El Escándalo is definitely all about the sex and romance. The girls are wearing tiny glittery dresses and the guys are wearing flowing unbuttoned shirts. It’s pretty people in pretty costumes shaking their hips onstage. The show knows, though, that its real strength is in how it’s going to entertain and inspire you, by making you laugh, sing and cheer right through. Each member of the cast brings a unique style and personality to the stage, meaning that you never know what’s coming next. The image left in your mind as you head home will absolutely be of the energy, grace and beauty of the dancers standing in the spotlight as the crowd applauds.
