Our first outing at FRINGE WORLD Festival 2023, and what a brilliant show to kick things off with!

We wandered through the hot summer night, to Raine Square. Cinema 4 proved an excellent venue for Aliya Kanani’s show ‘Where you from from?’ The crowd were in good spirits, and some brave souls moved to the front row on request. I can only imagine how difficult it would be to deliver your set with an empty row in front of you.

Aliya took to the stage and regaled us with stories of her move into comedy, and adventures and misadventures of varying magnitude. I found myself nodding in agreement, as much as I found myself laughing at her deftly delivered punchlines. The show was perfectly paced, with the stories weaving into each other seamlessly. Some of the set ups were so fast paced, I felt like I missed some of the intricacies with her quick delivery. She masterfully interacted with members of the audience and had us all laughing at ourselves, as she led us to ask questions about the questions we ask and are asked.

Fiercely intelligent and beautifully crafted, Aliya’s show is disarmingly hilarious and full of heart. Highly recommend!
