Simone Craddock has become a (if not the) doyen of the Perth jazz scene since her return from London four years ago. The breadth of her interest in song has no bounds, and no songwriter deserves attention like the late, great Stephen Sondheim.
Simone was joined on stage by three great Perth based singers: Ali Bodycoat, Brendan Hanson and Eimear Foley, with the very talented Joshua Haines on piano (making all arrangements to suit the instrument). Together, they delivered the full force of Sondheim's genius by performing a selection of songs from across his long and storied career. From West Side Story and Gypsy to deep cuts from films like 'Sooner or Later (I'm Gonna Get My Man)' from 'Dick Tracy', and 'I Never Do Anything Twice' from 'The Seven-Per-Cent Solution', the songs are acted as if in the productions or films themselves. Suddenly, you're captivated by them as if the theatre rather than the Ellington Club, the characters alive and in their stories.
Each performer is given a moment to tell the story of their relationship to Sondheim, so that you understand the music means more to them than simply another tune. The feeling they give each song is palpable. More's the pity then, that we do not often get to see the full productions of Sondheim here in Perth. We have the talent to pull it off! So, to get your fill of Sondheim for now, you must rush to see this show and savour it's hour of beauty in voice and keys. Not to be missed.
